Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs

Sanjay Somasundaram co-founded a technology start-up Eichiba Inc (USA) and learning’s from there helped him closely understand the commercial model of such companies. As a physician, he has experience in the pharmaceutical industry across clinical medicine, research, marketing and access. He was lead for the rare disease access program in Pfizer for five years. He and his co-author have extensively interacted with all stakeholders in the rare disease ecosystem including governments, public health experts, regulators, doctors, caregivers and patients to develop deep insights into their unmet needs and look for potential solutions.

Rare Diseases Eco System

Win is a Junior Doctor at Southend University Hospital (SUH) currently working as a Foundation year 2 doctors within AMU. Aside from her core role, Win is actively involved in the education of her fellow medical students, providing tutoring and mentorship to those around her. To date, she has involved in 2 QIPs including: (1) an audit of CFS adoption and its role in elderly patient care; and (2) Introduction of CAP care bundle sticker by improving usability and adoption of the CURB 65 score for patients with Community Acquired Pneumonia. Before joining SUH, Win worked both as a medical officer at Sakura Private General Hospital, and as a Civil Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health and Sports back in her homeland Myanmar. It was in Myanmar that she found her passion for medicine, after completing her M.B.B.S at the University of Medicine, Mandalay; and later undertaking a foundation year 1 program at a General Hospital operating 1000 beds for patients.

Rare Disorders

Ahmed Hassan obtained his Medical Doctorate at Charles University in Prague. He completed his Internship year at Motol University Hospital and qualified as a Doctor of Medicine. He found a passion for teaching and worked as a lecturer for several years at the Charles University 2nd Faculty of Medicine Department of Anatomy. He currently works as a junior doctor in the Acute Medicine department at Southend University Hospital. Ahmed is frequently involved in teaching medical students and fellow junior doctors. He has a special interest in Rheumatology and the acute presentation of autoimmune diseases. He recently presented a case-series on IgG-4 Related Diseases, and is participating in several research projects with the hopes of starting a career as a physician-scientist.
